Callicarpa bodinieri 'Profusion,' also known as 'clean fruit,' is known for the branches with purple berries that we often find in Christmas arrangements. The small lilac-colored flowers are arranged in a screen just under 5cm in diameter. It is a medium-sized deciduous shrub with an upright growing form, densely branched and abundantly flowering in the summer months (June-August) with violet to pink flowers in wide umbels. The young leaves turn dark green in full summer and turn golden yellow in autumn. After this, the leaves fall off the plant, making the berries extra visible on the bare branches. The sea of violet-purple berry-like drupes that sit in bunches along the branches and decorate the Callicarpa from October to December steal the show!
Care
The position of Callicarpa bodinieri 'Profusion' should be sunny but light shade is also tolerated. The soil should be well-drained because too wet soil in winter is detrimental to berry formation. After the first night frost, the plant loses its leaves after which the berries become even more noticeable. The plant is hardy to about -15 degrees Celsius. The Callicarpa bodinieri 'Profusion' grows about 200 to 250 cm high and about 200 cm wide. The berries of the Callicarpa are not poisonous, but it is not recommended to eat them. The Callicarpa bodinieri 'Profusion' is self-pollinating so with a single plant the purple berries are already formed. These violet-colored berries are not eaten by birds and therefore remain on the branches well into the winter. Even in the vase the branches remain long lasting.
Size
The plants have a height of 50-60cm upon delivery, measured including the nursery pot. The plants are supplied in a nursery pot with a diameter of 19cm.
